Dumb Search
I have just spent the past hour baffled and bemused by technology. It's not the nicest way to spend and afternoon.
My problem was very specific and very easily replicated. What's worse is that is was even more easily fixed. For those of you who care, I was using 3DS Max 2009, the latest in Autodesk's 3D authoring tools. My problem was that the handles that appear when you want to move an object disappeared and left me unable to move anything with any accuracy. I tried dozens of things to fix it. I even started up my desktop which is more accustomed to gathering dust and playing the odd bit of music in the vain hope it's unaltered display and settings would hold the key to enlightenment. But, alas, no. So i fiddled and tinkered for what seems like days, took a break, made coffee, came back and Nada.
But, fear not, if you can whisper the right sweet nothings in google's ear, she'll give up what your looking for. You just need to ask the right question. Thankfully, in 2005 some other poor soul crossed these troubled waters first. I should have just gone straight to google.
But this got me thinking, how does one go about making searching for things like that easier? I must have searched the max files for 30 odd combinations of search words. But what do you search for when you don't know what it's called? I'm looking for "that thingy that makes things move easier". There are thousands of "Smart Searches" out there. But what I'm looking for is a truly "Dumb search". That should help.
So how was my dilemma fixed? "x" key was hit and badda bing, badda boom. Fixed.
